Wayne County has many jobs across several industries. However, job searching and finding the right career can present some challenges. It can be a long, arduous process of trial and error. Luckily, Wayne County residents can access some beneficial resources to help them search for professional opportunities.

What are some of those resources, and how can they be used? As Forward Wayne County begins to focus on Employability, this blog will highlight several resources and how they can help you enhance your job search today.

Wayne County’s Employment Sector

Wayne County is home to a diverse employment sector. There are various companies in the community from several different industries and fields. According to data from STATS Indiana and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, Wayne County’s top three employment sectors are:

  • Healthcare: 6,401 jobs
  • Manufacturing: 5,883 jobs
  • Retail trade: 4,254 jobs

Some of the other prominent industries include education, construction, and accommodation. This diversity in employers gives job seekers the options they need to find a career. The problem is connecting them with those opportunities.

Wayne County Job Finder

Job boards are one of the easiest and most effective ways to find open positions. A relatively new resource that has become available to local job searchers is the Wayne County Job Finder. This project was spearheaded by the EDC of Wayne County, with support from the Wayne County Foundation and Forward Wayne County.

The Wayne County Job Board skims the internet for openings posted by local employers. It is free to use; no sign-in is required. Users can filter for jobs by industry, title, town, or company name. There are usually between 1,500 and 2,000 listings on it at a time.

Someone looking for work with a specific company should see if that organization has a job board.

Local Career Fairs

Career fairs can help job seekers connect with companies and learn about potential employment opportunities. Wayne County has several annual and recurring career fairs. A newly created initiative between the Richmond Housing Authority and Eastern Indiana Works has spurred more of these events.

Throughout 2024, the Housing Authority is hosting career fairs at various locations on the last Wednesday of every other month. Several employers from Wayne County and the surrounding area attend every fair. So far, the sessions have been well attended, with around 50 job seekers at each one.

Anyone with questions should contact Lindsay Freed, Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator, at lindsay@hacrhousing.com. Interested employers can register their organization here.

Another local career fair coming up is the Chamber of Commerce Hiring Fair. The event will be open to the general public from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the First Bank Kuhlman Center at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Staffing and Workforce Development Agencies

Staffing and workforce development agencies allow job seekers to access various resources that will help them find the right fit for their careers. Some organizations of this nature in Wayne County include Eastern Indiana Works and Manpower. They can help provide job searchers and employers with the services they need.

Searching for a new job can have the perception of being confusing and stressful. However, Wayne County residents have a wealth of resources to pull from to help them in their search. The complicated component is connecting them with the right services and platforms. There are several employment opportunities in Wayne County, and reading this blog will bring more attention to them.
