For the month of July, Forward Wayne County is focused on Our Community. Communities are groups of people who live together and share common attitudes, interests, and goals – and strong communities are places of opportunity. Wayne County has several communities to be a part of, and there are so many ways to get involved!

Volunteer

One of the best ways to get connected with your community is to volunteer! There are dozens of organizations that are always looking for individuals to volunteer their time or talents. Volunteering is a huge help to organizations struggling to fill staffing requirements. It can also help connect you with like-minded individuals!

Finding a nonprofit organization to volunteer with can be daunting, but Wayne County has plenty of options! You can start by thinking of the organizations you already interact with. It could be your church, your child’s school, or even one you’ve heard of in passing. Alternatively, Waynet has an online directory that lists some of the not-for-profit organizations within Wayne County. While this list is not extensive, this can be a great place to start your search.

Many nonprofit organizations also have various committees that deal with more specific issues. Or, if you want to take your service to the next level, joining an organization’s Board of Directors can be an option! While this is much more involved than everyday volunteering, serving on a board can be very rewarding – albeit much more of a commitment and responsibility.

Join a Group or Community

Wayne County has plenty of groups for almost any interest you have! Social media is a great place to start your search. From biking groups to photography clubs, Wayne County has something for you.

If you’re between the ages of 21 and 40 and are looking for a professional networking group, HYPE Wayne County is one for your radar. HYPE aims to engage young professionals in the community through social and professional development opportunities.

Finding an organization to join can help you forge connections in the community and feel more grounded where you are. Whatever your interests, chances are you can find like-minded individuals!

Attend Community Events

Festivals, farmers markets, and more – there’s always something happening in Wayne County! On any given weekend (and most weeknights, too), you can find something to do in one of the communities across Wayne County.

The Richmond-Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau has a wealth of information on activities around the county. Check out their Things to Do page for a list of attractions or their Events & Festivals page for an up-to-date list.

And, of course, follow the Forward Wayne County Newsletter where we share upcoming community events each month!
